Green technology can affect the way we live, work and play. It’s these green technologies can generate a healthier environment as well as reducing energy costs. In simple terms, that’s why we, as a society, are going green. Without it, a vast impact is made on the natural environment, our health and national economy. One of the greatest impacts that we face is energy. We acquire it from a number of forms such as crude oil, wind power, water power, coal, and natural gas. Each form of energy generates some type of pollution and puts a huge strain on our economy. Pollution, of course affects all of us, whether it’s air, water or ground. Imagine running your household being completely energy efficient and energy independent. The way we live, work and play could change immensely.
Our West 5 community will focus on harnessing the power of the sun to generate energy through a variety of solar powered features. Solar panels and solar parkades not only keep you dry and cool, but they generate electricity, thus reducing energy costs. Solar streetlights will illuminate the neighbourhood while also powering the community. In addition, West 5 will be host to a number of green roof installations. Green roofs serve several purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and providing a more aesthetically pleasing landscape. They also help to lower urban air temperatures and effectively utilize the natural functions of plants to filter water and treat air in urban and suburban landscapes. Sustainable design encompasses the development of green technology, which is a staple of sustainable living practices.
Sifton has always been environmentally conscious and focused on the latest innovations. I’m proud to say that these fundamentals will continue to drive our renewable choices at West 5, setting the benchmark for green construction in Canada.
