Water is one of our most precious natural resources and something that most of us take for granted. We are now increasingly becoming aware of the importance of water to our survival and its limited supply. Our West 5 Community is committed to maximizing the potential of natural elements in order to minimize the draw on resources needed for everyday life. Rain harvesting technology is one of the many sustainability features that our community will support.
The harvesting of rainwater simply involves the collection of water from surfaces on which rain falls, and the subsequent storage of this water for later use. Water is typically collected from the roofs of buildings and stored in rainwater tanks for repurpose. Rainwater is an economical alternative to public water, especially for exterior water uses such as landscape irrigation that require minimal filtration. It can also be used for filling swimming pools, garden ponds and even producing drinkable water. In addition, by capturing water, the flow of stormwater is also reduced and this minimizes the likelihood of overloading the stormwater systems in neighbourhoods. We will also be exploring the potential to use other water sources including ground water wells.
