Mixed-Use Development At West 5

Being able to live, work, and play in an urban location is becoming increasingly important for many homebuyers. Last week I talked about getting around in West 5, and the way in which residents will be able to get to the lively town center – but what I want to discuss this week is the possibility of simply staying in the town center.
We’re going to be creating a mixed-use development in West 5, meaning that there will be residential and office space above retail and commercial space. Mixed-use neighbourhoods create pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environments. They do this by reducing dependency on vehicles and traffic congestion, and by shortening distances between housing, workplaces and other destinations. Designing mixed-use spaces is a critical part of building a dynamic city where there’s a variety of things taking place at all hours of the night and day. It ensures that residents cannot only fulfill a multitude of daily errands and necessities, but also unwind and enjoy everything the community has to offer.
“Intricate minglings of different uses in cities are not a form of chaos, but rather, represent a complex and highly developed form of order.”
– Jane Jacobs, Urban theorist
There are many benefits to mixed-use development – namely improvements to a community’s health, environment, and economy. Besides the benefits of a walkable city, and better use of energy and resources, mixed-use development fosters interaction among community members.
To put it simply, it spurs economic growth, social cohesion, and quality of life. West 5 is going to be a socially connected community, and this type of development will be one of the driving forces that will define this vision. You’ll truly be able to do it all here.
