Earth Hour Dragons

[ultimate_spacer height=”20″] [vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”1238″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” image_hovers=”false”] Although we never officially called it “Earth Hour”, our family has a tradition of turning out the house lights, sitting on our front porch. We often looked up to the stars and would compete with each other to see which constellations we could find, the Big Dipper was always the easiest to spot, but my favourite was Draco, the Dragon. I would squint my left eye to help me zero in on the stars and use my finger to trace the pattern beginning with the tail of the dragon as it split between the Big Dipper and Little Dipper, forming a u-shape before wrapping down to the dragon’s diamond shaped head resting just below the bowl of the little dipper. The wonder of Earth and space regularly fuelled the conversation and we really got a sense that we share this planet with millions of other people – all of us wanting the same things – family, friends, and a bright future.

Today, it warms me up to see that our bright future includes West 5, so at Sifton we’ll celebrate Earth Hour on March 19 with the rest of the world, but live out its promise each and every day. It’s a community that has turned traditional neighbourhood design on its head. A community planned around pedestrians and cyclists, not cars. Kilometers of trails and bike lanes make driving unnecessary and lead the movement to a cleaner way to live. We use low carbon methods such as solar panels to generate power, both thermal and electrical. It is a wonderful thing to think that every LED light bulb, every thermostat will be saving energy.

So on March 19th, turn off the your lights, look up to the stars, and remember, a brighter future is coming at West 5.
