We’ve already sprung into March and, for most of us, any New Year’s Resolutions we made are now just very distant memories.
But soon the breeze is will get warmer and the trees will become greener, making it a great time to take a fresh new look at our fitness-related resolutions.
Fitness doesn’t have to mean suffering through grueling training sessions in the gym day after day. Fitness can mean getting some fresh air and connecting with nature and our community. With the immensity of the greenery that will be available within and around West 5, there is absolutely no need to torture ourselves with treadmills.
Here are our top tips for making outdoor exercise a fun part of your everyday:
- Set goals: Goal setting is key to getting you out of the house when your couch is looking extra comfy. Consider purchasing some wearable fitness technology like a Fitbit. Set a daily steps goal and don’t stop until you’ve hit it!
- Keep your cover: Don’t forget your sunscreen and sunglasses! The gym walls won’t be there to protect you from the sun.
- Stock up on motivation: Whether it’s taking a post-workout selfie and sharing it on Instagram, enlisting a reliable workout buddy, or creating the ultimate workout playlist, give yourself as many reasons as possible to get out and get moving!
- Change it up: Try something new to avoid getting bored. If sprinting, cycling and sauntering just aren’t doing it for you anymore- worry not. You’ll be able to sign up for one of West 5’s outdoor yoga classes or dance the night away at one of Legacy Square’s outdoor concerts. You won’t even realize you’re working out, and you’ll get to make a ton of new friends and really connect with your community. That’s what West 5 is all about.
If all else fails, get in the habit of challenging your kids to a race to the neighbourhood park and help them conquer the jungle gym. Then cool off for a few moments in the shade before you make another beeline for the swings.
Alternatively, the lush Kains Woods Trail is just a quick jaunt away and is ideal for hitting a new personal best, walking your dog and for taking that perfect post-workout selfie. This picturesque, Instagram-worthy greenspace is fit to serve as the backdrop for any and every way you like to move.
So no matter how you like to move, don your sneakers, grab that Fitbit and enjoy the great outdoors with your next workout!
